Blackjack Rules

This page describes the full rules used by Blackjack Strategy Coach so your training decisions match how hands are settled in the app.

Game Objective

  • Beat the dealer without going over 21.
  • Higher total than dealer wins if neither hand busts.
  • If your total is over 21, your hand busts and loses immediately.

Card Values

  • Number cards are worth face value.
  • J, Q, K are worth 10.
  • Ace is worth 11 or 1, whichever gives the best legal total.
  • A two-card 21 (Ace + 10-value card) is a natural blackjack.

Table Rules In This Trainer

  • 4 decks.
  • Dealer stands on soft 17 (S17).
  • No surrender.
  • No insurance.
  • Double after split is allowed.
  • Maximum split hands: 4.

Round Flow

  1. You place a bet and receive two cards.
  2. Dealer receives one upcard and one hole card.
  3. You play each hand using available actions.
  4. After all player hands are done, dealer resolves their hand unless all player hands already busted.
  5. Hands are settled and bankroll is updated.

Player Actions

  • Hit: take one card. If total exceeds 21, hand busts and cannot continue.
  • Stand: keep current total and end action for that hand.
  • Double: available only on first two cards of a hand when bankroll allows. Bet is doubled, exactly one card is drawn, then the hand stands.
  • Split: available on pairs (first two cards same rank) when bankroll and max-hand limit allow. The pair is split into two hands with equal bets.

Dealer Rules

  • Dealer reveals hole card after player decisions are complete.
  • Dealer hits until at least 17.
  • Dealer stands on all 17 totals, including soft 17.

Outcomes And Payouts

  • Regular win pays 1:1.
  • Push returns original bet.
  • Natural blackjack pays 3:2.
  • If both player and dealer have natural blackjack, it is a push.
  • A 21 made with 3+ cards is not a natural blackjack.
